As parents, educators, and book enthusiasts, we’ve worked to diversify our children’s libraries, exposing them to a world of stories reflecting the rich tapestry of human experiences. Despite our commitment to inclusivity, festive seasons often revert to stereotypical narratives due to limited choices. It’s time to expand our festive bookshelves, ensuring our children’s literary landscapes stay as diverse as the world around them.
Rudine Sims Bishop introduced the concept of “Windows and Mirrors,” where windows offer new perspectives, fostering empathy, and mirrors validate a child’s experiences, building a sense of belonging. Take a look at my detailed exploration of this theory in relation to race in a book highlight on Instagram.
Now is an ideal moment to embrace diverse stories that serve as both windows and mirrors for our children. Explore holiday traditions worldwide or introduce characters from various backgrounds celebrating together, enriching festivities with the true spirit of unity in diversity. Imagine the joy when children find characters who resemble them, celebrating in ways resonating with their traditions.
Amidst tinsel and carol-singing, take a moment to address global issues, even with younger children. Many schools include the nativity story, offering an opportunity to discuss broader topics. Consider talking to your children about speaking up for Palestine, fostering understanding and compassion. This is a chance to instil values of empathy, understanding, and shared traditions in our children. By doing so, we provide windows into new worlds and mirrors reflecting the diverse beauty within each of us.
